Practicality vs Design

When it comes to buildings, is having a good looking building really worth sacrificing practicality in the form of functional office spaces? Do companies want to lease a building that looks cool but has barely any office space OR would they prefer an average looking building with plenty of space?

More and more, designers and architecturers are becoming more bold in their design of buildings to make them really stand out from the crowd. For the most part this is fine, however some design buildings in such a way that it looked at as more important than the actual purpose of it.

Take 8 Chifley skyscraper for example. It is by far, one of the best looking office buildings in Sydney, however it is quite impractical when it comes to maximising usable office space. By simply looking at it you are able to tell this, from the raised base of the building, to the empty space right in the middle of the building.

The amount of space that is unused in this building is astonishing. Talk about a waste of space, especially given the current cost of real estate in the Australian market!!

But when you put that all aside, up close, this building is awesome to look at with the large exposed steel beams acting as 'legs'  and running up and down the side of the building, to the stair cases on the far right-hand side of the building.
